airBaltic to launch new base outside of the Baltics
The flag carrier of Latvia, airBaltic, has revealed the launch date of its first base outside the Baltics.
On December 14, 2021, the Latvian airline airBaltic announced that it will launch a new base in Tampere (TMP), Finland in May 2022, from where it will start serving new direct regular flights, connecting the second-largest Finnish city with six destinations, including Oslo (OSL), Copenhagen (CPH), Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Malaga (AGP) and Rhodes (RHO).
According to a preliminary schedule, from May 1, 2022, the airline plans to launch flights connecting Tampere and Malaga, which are set to be operated with a frequency of two flights per week. Then, starting on May 2, 2022, airBaltic is planning the launch of operations from its new Finnish hub to Oslo, Frankfurt, and Munich, which are all due to be flown 3 times per week. From May 3, 2022, the Latvian airline will begin thrice-weekly services between Tampere and Copenhagen, as well as twice-weekly flights between the new hub and Rhodes.
Martin Gauss, the CEO of airBaltic, said: “We have been performing direct flights from Tampere to Riga for almost five years now. Our decision to open a new base in Tampere shows our strong commitment to this city, and will offer more convenient and affordable travel options for many Finnish passengers.”
airBaltic says it currently serves a network of 70 direct destinations from its Baltic-state hubs in Riga (RIX), Tallinn (TLL), and Vilnius (VNO).
Most recently, in September 2021, the airline launched direct connectivity links from its home base at RIX airport to Tenerife (TFS) and Dubai (DXB).
