LanzaJet, a US-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer, has received an investment from the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. 

The fund has agreed to invest $50 million into LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels plant in Soperton, Georgia, US. 

The plant is going to produce SAF and renewable diesel from ethanol, which the company claims is going to be acquired from low-carbon, sustainable sources, such as waste. 

“We set a bold ambition to support the White House with a goal of 1 billion gallons of sustainable fuels by 2030,” Jimmy Samartzis, the CEO of LanzaJet, is quoted in the company’s press release. 

“With Microsoft’s support, this first plant significantly expands the production of sustainable fuels in the US, establishes Georgia as a leader in clean tech, and is the foundation for us as the first alcohol-to-jet sustainable fuels producer, and as a blueprint for the commercial plants we’re developing globally.” 

According to LanzaJet, the Freedom Pines Fuels plant is due to be completed in 2022, and start producing up to 10 million gallons (around 38 million liters) of SAF and renewable diesel per year starting from 2023. 

According to Microsoft, part of the plant’s production will be used by the company, helping it reach its goal of becoming carbon-negative by 2030.
