Hong Kong airport says 2021 passenger traffic remained ‘significantly low’
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) yearly passenger traffic numbers for 2021 remained “significantly low” due to stringent quarantine rules in Hong Kong, the airport announced on January 25, 2022.
The airline’s passenger traffic plummeted by approximately 98% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. In 2021, HKG airport handled 1.4 million passengers and 144,815 flights.
In comparison, the airport handled 71.5 million passengers in 2019, and 8.8 million passengers in 2020.
However, HKG airport marked that cargo activities remained strong. Throughout 2021, cargo rose by 12.5% year on year to 5 million tons, exceeding the 4.8 million tons recorded in 2019.
In December 2021, HKG handled 154,000 passengers and 14,515 operations, an increase of 70% and 14.7% respectively compared to the same month in 2020. According to the airport, outbound transfer passengers from Mainland China have largely attributed to improved passenger traffic in December.
